AHF Kenya began operations in 2007 and was officially registered as a National NGO operating in Kenya on June 2008. AHF Kenya programs are run in collaboration with partners, the Ministry of Health and local governments.
The HIV care and treatment program focuses on holistic approach to care and treatment for the HIV infected people. The key interventions include management of opportunistic illness and co-morbidities, STI management and treatment of TB/HIV co-infection.
The key focus is to have quality services to Kenyans at no cost at all. Quality is maintained through the set indicators and reviews by the Quality assurance team.
AHF Kenya has a prevention program which works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in HIV testing and condom distribution. AHF Kenya’s strategic partners include the Ministry of Health through NASCOP and NACC, Civil Society Organizations including NEPHAK, KANCO, KELIN, HENNET amongst others.
AHF Kenya also supports a multi-pronged prevention program that includes monthly outreach of free HIV testing and counseling into a multitude of local communities which allows the team to identify people living with HIV who are out of care and link them to services. More than 2,670,000 people have been tested for HIV since the year 2010 through AHF Kenya’s rapid testing program, and over 13 Million condoms were distributed through local outreach and safer sex promotions. AHF Kenya works in collaboration with national and County governments Ministry of Health to provide HIV care and treatment including free antiretroviral therapy, Opportunistic Infections treatment, lab monitoring and STI management. HIV testing services condom promotion and distribution.
As of 2017, approximately 1.5 million Kenyans were living with HIV, out of the 47 million total population. HIV related deaths have significantly reduced over the years due to the increase in number of people accessing treatment. Overall, there are marked gender disparities which characterize the HIV epidemic with higher prevalence being amongst women at 5.2% compared to men at 4.5%.
Kenya’s HIV prevalence, among adults 15-64 years old, is estimated to be 4.9%. Kenya has reported 52,800 new HIV infections. Out of the 1.5 million Kenyans living with HIV.
